7.62x39 will penetrate soft body armor as will 5.56. You need plates to stop rifle rounds...period. A 1/2 inch ceramic plate should stop 7.62x51 as well.? 3/4 inch ceramic plates will stop rounds up to..well, I'm not sure but it managed to stopped three 300 win mag rounds when we tested it out on deployment so that's something.

a 7.62 NATO (7.62x51) will though. And body armor is a vague term: the standard issue and mostly available vests without plates etc will get pierced by most assault/high power rifle? rounds

I think you've misunderstood the concept of #world countries. It's basically based on sides during the Cold War (if I remember my shit correctly) where USA and NATO countries are first world, Soviet (communistic) countries are second world and the countries who stayed outside the fight are third world countries. Russia was the base of the? Soviet Union, and is thus a second world country.

The 7.62x39 147 grain FMJ round will not go through body armor. No armor piercing? is different. But it is really hard to get.
