Robert Wilkins - Just a Closer Walk With Thee
Posted by: busessuck1
Video duration: 184 seconds
Beautiful performance by Memphis bluesman-turned-prea cher Rev. Robert Wilkins. Recorded in 1964 - it's been out of print for nearly 50 years, which is a shame...
First recorded by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the song seems to stem from New Orleans - but was supposedly attributed to Robert Johnson (which was dismissed by Johnny Shines when interviewed about it)
Related: rosetta, tharpe, mahalia, jackson, gus, cannon, sleepy, john, estes, henry, red, allen, revival, gospel, blues, spiritual, singing, hymn

Ever since I was around 13? years old I have enjoyed the blues, yes a white boy from the south loving the blues. I couldn't understand the hatred some of my contemporaries had for the blues, they loved and enjoyed pop and bubble gum to the exclusion of the better soulful sounds. I guess I was precocious in my understanding, though it always felt so lonely. Now that I have grown I still love the blues and hope one day to go the the Blues Museum.

Isn't it amazing that such soulful music came? from such unlearned men and women? I love the early blues recordings, very few of today's artists have that same feeling for the world and its situations. Thanks for posting such an enormously brilliant song.
