The actors don't speechify endlessly, the camera moves, and the story moves with it. Unlike many films from 1929 it's worth a repeat viewing for the entertainment value, not just the novelty of seeing an industry in transition.

I think the idea behind the movie (aside from being inspired by crack use as Tom and Crow suggested) was to capitalize on the whole "creature flick" craze of the 80's. You had Gremlins, Munchies and Critters all involving cute yet deadly little monsters that ran amok and caused crap.

In defense of the film, though, I have to say I did like the movie's theme of "country vs city", which was a more wide-spread literary/artistic theme? a hundred years ago, but has now largely disappeared and replaced by the ubiquitous "civilized city vs primitive country".

Ofcourse, Rankin-Bass were experts at such careful emotional-capture, as they've done the stop-motion Christmas specials of the 60's, like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty the Snowman".
It's likely a generational thing. These older animators just grew up? at a time when purity and ethical values still mattered, not sarcasm and vulgarity.
